Setting Up Aquariums – The 10 Most Important Considerations

Hi: my name is Louie Wellsby and I have had freshwater and saltwater fish as pets for over 12 years now and just love having aquariums in my home.

Setting up an aquarium may seem like a simple job, but if you want healthy fish and dont want a lot of aggravation, there are some very basic things to consider.

Most people dont know this, but having an aquarium in your environment is VERY relaxing and soothing. Ever wonder why so many doctor & dentist offices have an aquarium? Well, its for that very reason they are VERY relaxing … and setting up aquarium and maintaining them is something I know how to do quite well.

When setting up an aquarium, here are some of the basics you need to consider:

1. What kind of fish you want? – this decision will influence so many other decisions, so start here. They have to be freshwater or saltwater (marine) in the same tank. Seems obvious, but some folks make a mistake here!

2. The number of fish you want – the more you have, the bigger the tank needs to be to maintain a healthy environment.

3. The Types of fish you want – not all fish get along. Make sure the fish you select wont fight with or eat each other.

Remember: The basic rule when setting up an aquarium is big tank = less maintenance and small tank = more maintenance.

5. Tank Stand – once you decide on the size of the aquarium you want, the weight of that aquarium when filled with water will determine the size of the aquarium stand.

7. Pumps – two primary considerations here: A. Power – you want to get a pump that is designed for the size of your aquarium. This will insure that the aquatic environment stays healthy for your fish. B. Noise – spend the money necessary to get a high-quality pump that is as QUIET as possible. A noisy pump will soon irritate you count on it!

9. Heaters – some fish particularly tropical fish like warmer water and setting up your aquarium will require a heater. Again, the size of the heater you need will be governed by tank size.

For you, the decision is easy; pick plants, gravel and other decorations that you will give you pleasure to look at.

As I said, I have had aquariums for over 12 years now and have really enjoyed having my aquariums and the serenity they bring to my home … (I have both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.)

Once you have finished setting up your aquarium, and you are positive that your equipment is working properly and the water temperature is correct you can start to introduce your fish to their new home.
