Wood Fence Designs and Their Uses

Fencing is one way to get the privacy and security that you want in your home. With wood fencing, you get the added advantage of having a great appearance that you don’t get with metal fences.

Wood fences come in a variety of styles and wood materials. It is best to keep in mind though, that choosing the right design for a wood fence depends largely on two main factors that a homeowner may be aiming for: the form, or the aesthetic appeal; and the functionality, or the main purpose why you are putting up a fence in the first place.

A wood fence can give you the security and the appearance that you are looking for, depending on the degree of security that you need. If you need a nice looking design in your garden that also gives you some extra privacy from the neighbours then there are many wooden fences to choose from.

For others, the choice is not so clear-cut. When endeavoring to provide as much security as possible to one’s property, a metal or stone fencing would be more appropriate under the circumstances, disregarding the fact that wooden fencing may be a better fit for the style of your house.

Wood Fence Designs: When Form is the Main Consideration

The first consideration here is to find the fence that compliments your garden and landscaping arrangement. There are a number of basic wooden fence designs that take into account the style of your house. Here they are:

Picket style fence. This is best suited for cottage style housing and gives a great compliment to these types of gardens and landscaped homes. You can also find these in a variety of types. One of the most popular is the dog-ear spaced picket, French gothic spaced picket, and the pointed top spaced picket.

Split-rail wood fence. These are great for the country style of home with a south-western USA design. If you choose this design, then try to use a western red cedar wood.

Log wood fence. If you have a house with a rustic feel, then I would recommend the log wood fence design. You can find these with vertical and horizontal panels, but the vertical ones are best.

Wood Fence Designs: When Functionality is Top Priority

While wood fencing is great in creating a look that complements your house and property, they also give you a couple of great functional benefits. These are the privacy and durability these fences offer. If these are the most important factors to you, then consider the following options.

Stockade fence. With the wood slats vertically aligned without spaces in between and the tops pointed out, stockade fencing is one of the most appropriate wood fence designs when the intention is to afford absolute privacy from the outside.

Solid board fence. This type of wood fence gives a lot of privacy also, especially from outsiders trying to look in. It creates a visual barrier and also provides a nice security measure. This allows you to have a more customised finish on the wood, as it is a solid fence with lattice work on top.

Lattice fencing. Lattice fences are a popular choice for fences that give a semblance of privacy and yet allow for some air and sunlight at the same time. Lattice slats may be laid out diagonally for diamond-shaped spaces, but can also be placed vertically and horizontally to create square-shaped openings.
