Bridgetown Is In Barbados

The historic capital of Barbados is Bridgetown which is well known through the Indies. Being one of the largest city on the island with 100,000 people living there. Most other countries would consider Bridgetown in Barbados a town. Some of Bridgetown fall in different areas, mostly St Michael but some parts of the city are in Christchurch and St James. The name was changed from James Town in 1628 and the present location was decided upon.

British landed on Barbados and found it was unspoilt and could not find many inhabitants and there was very little evidence to suggest any body else having ever lived on the island in years before. They did find a simple bridge which had been put over a swamp and this was though to have been put there by a group of people call the Arawak’s which were know for living on some of the islands.

The City has much life with many great designer shops, attractions, night clubs, eateries and much more. A visit is well worth wherever you stay on the island. I do not think Barbados would be able to keep going without its tourist trade as to date there two main exports are Rum and Sugar.

South of the Island is the home for Bridgetown. Being there is some great history to be learnt in Barbados. You will find many attractions here and I would say if you are interested in learning some history about Barbados this small city is a must! The taxi drivers know a lot of history too, maybe have a taxi for the day and have a whole island tour.

In this Capital you can expect to have a great shopping experience at some of the malls and designer retail outlets, but if you after more authentic Bajan items then Cheapside Market is a must and its surrounding shops too. Many a bargain can be found there.

Barbados and Bridgetown in particular are known for their excellent value for money and quality diamonds, so be prepared if the wife is on the look out for a new bit of jewellery. Prices are extremely negotiable in the reputable jewellery outlets, please be aware that most places are honest and good quality however there will always be someone willing to ruin the party therefore do not buy from street traders or someone that approaches you on the street.

The most well know and best values Jewellers on the Island are probably Diamonds International. Again best to probably buy in US dollars as we get the better exchange rate on this.

The capital is also known for its great party environment for an evening with its many nightclubs and bars there will be something for you. Or try some of the other place like Holetown which has a square with several bars and restauransts then there is no needs to walk far.

Like any city always be cautious of your surroundings and I advise to get a taxi home at night. Barbados has a very low crime rate but that does not mean you should not be careful.

In the UK it is a popular design to wear camouflage t-shirts and shorts but in Barbados it is illegal. You maybe lucky to get a waring but there is a good chance that the police will let you have a night in a local police station. And from the stories I have heard you do not want to do that!

Even if you are not staying in the South of the Island, Bridgetown is without a doubt worth a visit, it is a beautiful and charming City with a rich history and fantastic atmosphere.
